A few weeks back I had been going through my hd and came across a whole heap of files which I thought had been lost. I've had maybe 3 computers since they were created so it was kind of surprising to find them there. This one was buried 9 folders deep.
From a college project in 2004, the original brief was to create a book with the theme '10' and focusing on typography. I admit I somewhat strayed from the brief and probably paid more attention to the imagery I was using at the time. Subsequently, I think I ended up getting horrible marks for it. None the less I kind of liked the result so wasn't so bothered to fail.
As my idea I chose 10 words to represent my personality and to visualise on these. Some might seem strange, though they do have slightly vague interpretations. Looking back on it, I'm quite intrigued by the images I had chosen and think they fit quite well...I suppose some requiring more thought than others. I had presented it printed and perfect bound, about 150x100mm or so in size. The original I believe to be in an attic somewhere in Sydney...probably collecting dust and bugs.
I'm open to any suggestions or things anyone thinks I could have done better.
Also, I would have liked to credit anyone with the images used, I think they are all free resource, but since it was so long ago I can't be sure. Please correct me if you know of any different.
this is very cool. with the definitions and the designs to portray them. is the ordering relevant? just curious :] i think it is a great idea and it can be expanded also. very eye opening and thought provoking for sure. i love how they all are so uniform and look so good as a whole just as each individual trait. i don't have any suggestions for better, but you can always take things you have picked up in the last 4 years and apply them to a new design and see where it puts you. you may also find that now you may require different words/defs even. it would be awesome to reflect upon them both and then after so many years and then you could perhaps do another. this is something i might find myself doing.. would be interesting and constructive. very inspiring carly.

carly Are you maybe suggesting the ordering is by strength? Heh..no it's just alphabetically, I don't think I could come up with any other way. I quite like your suggestion for a new set to relate to now. Thinking about it, the words might remain quite the same...maybe just the levels of what I am more of would have changed. But I think in the least the imagery would be a happier and a little less disturbing. Thank you for your comments Mere it means a lot to me :) xx

meredith yeah i was talking strength and now i see. duh lol.
but yeah it would be really cool to see a new one.
i am going to put this on my list but i know it will be some time before i am done.
This is fantastic. What's funny is I'm seeing quite a few hints of "Luis' work" in each one of these. I'll post a more detailed view on this once I actually have more than 10 minutes spare :\

devian Quick addition. This really makes me wish I went to school in Sydney. Lots of emphasis on typography and stepping outside the box, unlike what I'm in currently which is a lot of emphasis on print design, and corporate "stick to the guidelines" than others.

carly True I guess I had a lot of inspiration from him in those times. But I think also the style quite suited me as a person back then too. Like I mentioned to Mere, if doing it in this day it would probably be a little different :)
Also, I don't think it has anything to do with Sydney but a bit more towards the college itself. I think it's also quite personal and how you want to push the brief. I didn't get great marks at college because I was constantly breaking the rules and the teachers didn't like that ;) (ok I admit I hardly ever did work and that's why I got bad grades also). I remember having life drawing class and I failed because my teacher said my drawings were too abstract and not perfectly drawn exactly from life. Having said that though...I did have a great teacher in a course I did 2 years before that at the same college who when I told him I didn't do my homework for thumbnails of my furniture design he walked out of the room and came back with a dissected rabbit and frog for me to get inspiration from.
Thanks for your comments Sean, and I will wait till you respond more indepth :P

devian Talking about that, I'm in class now and making time to comment back. Anyways, I l ike the minimalism of a majority of them. Not to a large extent, but subtleness of it in each one. The typography is fantastic, and even the destruction of the type. The drawings are awesome, and make me wish I had a more large scale scanner, rather than a crappy 8x10 one.
Eh, it's different here. I'm getting a majority of good grades but a few bad ones on various classes (enough to get credit) because those were the ones that were too guideline specific and half the time I said "fuck it, I'm staying home to do art." But again, your work as well as Luis are so unique in a way that I'm almost envious, and wish I was allowed, well, COULD do it without failing the class. I have had a few great teachers though. One sat me down and told me I have the potential to be one of the best if I chose to. Which just caused more stress :\
Anyways, I wouldn't mind seeing more work from you during the college years. Hell more work from you in general. :P

carly Most of the images and textures I had used were stock so don't go thinking I had a fantastic scanner either because I didn't! But you know, I was often like that too, blaming my lack of resources for why I couldn't make things. I remember years back Luis had a horrible old scanner that was low quality, the colours would come out funny, and often the images were all cut up because it didn't scan properly. He used to just make the most of it and add that effect into his artwork like he'd done it on purpose! Sometimes these things are what make it really special, like holgas :) .
For class what I often did in most my projects was to conform to the brief and give exactly what my teacher wanted, and then make another for how I wanted it and hand in both. This worked really well for me just as much then as it does now, clients will want the same of you too. The most important thing is that you're learning and getting skills out of it that you're going to use later on in working life because at the end of the day an employer is not going to give a crap about seeing ur degree, what grades you got or how often you turned up to class. He'll see whatever goes into your folio and judge from your character, so just make it worth it!
I don't really have that much stuff from college that I was too proud of cause I was so lazy at the time, but maybe I will find some and upload more :)
You did a good job Carly. Well joined elements and the typo is awesome!!
looks somehow retro and modern at the same time...in different times
you had a bad mark? gezzz....
