My Thoughts Crave Your Thoughts.
Illustrator vs Photoshop. We Need Information. Little things even if you think that everyone knows them because... Most Likely They Don't :].
Example: What does what best, What doesn't do what best, Whats the easiest way to do this, Or the quickest way to do that, Or even though there is a quicker way the BEST way is this.. , Or tools you prefer in each, i.e...Text in Illustrator vs. Text in Photoshop, what is YOUR preference ... and describe the functionality of those tools you love and why.
Any thoughts or info you have regarding them that you could bring to the forum to help encourage growth... Leave it here!
And i would like to say in advance, everyone is awesome!

I. Love. Photoshop. I have the Adobe CS2 and (at the time) Macromedia 8 studios, and of all the programs I use Photoshop the most. It does my web design easy and I've been using it for something like 5 years now. I hear Illustrator is good, but I'm nto toughing it without a tablet...
Bad about Photoshop: Doesn't code in CSS. ;)

Well, though a tablet might be handy, its kinda obsolete to use it since you can do the same job with a mouse - its all about rotating the anchor points. In fact it was easier to work with the mouse when working with paths.

PC's need a key that is equivalent to the Apple Key. i was told once it was alt or ctrl but its never been the case for me.
The reason i ask is because i find i click off on an object only to realize 10 actions later i have clicked on another object on a lower layer, because there are other objects around, and before i realize, ive created a new object on the wrong layer. and then i have to drag my new object up to the correct layer & when you start to get alot of objects it can get confusing and frustrating, it would be easy just to de select or release... :[

James, i actually found i use my tablet more-so in photo shop, because i am painting and not just making lines.. with illustrators tools (at least for me) they are just as easy with the mouse :]

Shift+Ctrl+A
Also in most, if not all, the Creative Suite you can change and add your own keyboard shortcuts, you should find this through the edit and/or preferences menu. I have done this quite a bit in Illustrator and InDesign where shortcuts didn't previously exists for things I used quite often. Very handy!
I also find using pen in Illustrator is awkward and just doesn't really make sense. Pen for painting only for me.

You are most welcome! I have to say this shortcut is one of the most useful in Illustrator!! :D
Oh how I love Illustrator....we could get married. If only it had a "step and repeat" function like InDesign. I almost love InDesign just as much...if only it had rotatable guidelines like Illustrator :]

I do everything with the tablet, Illu or PS.
I guess it's a matter of preference and habit.
In Illu, I need to be more tidy than in Photoshop because it's more cumbersome to move things around osit.
I developed two brains, like a dolphin.

Meredith, I hope I'm understanding your question correctly. To "deselect" an object or field the shortcut is SHIFT+APPLE KEY+A for a Mac. On a PC it would be SHIFT+CONTROL+A, but don't quote me on that because I don't have a PC in front of me.
Oh I just realized how old this post is, you've probably figured this out by now.
For me, PS and AI work best in tandem. Text is easier to layout and alter in illustrator, but for any sort of effects, filters, or layer tricks Photoshop is the way to go. They both have very robust brush systems, though they work differently obviously. I'm often drawing simple or complex shapes in Illustrator then taking them into PS to alter more freely, without having to worry about points and curves. The new eraser tool in AI CS3 is pretty sweet but unpredictable at times, so in the end it winds up being easier to just erase and edit in PS. Also I love to livetrace my drawings in different ways to explore possibilities.

CMND+SHFT+A is deselect. You can also hold the SHFT key and clicky the object you be working with and it will deselect.
As for your stress with the plethora of objects in illustrator you are on the right track; layers is key. More layers the better. Layers layers layers. You can always lock a layer with that tricky object that always seems to want to be selected. Actually, when I am drawing in Illustrator, I usually have every layer locked except for the one I am working on. It is a bit annoying to set it all up, but definitely worth it in the end.
