Size Matters

What size do you normally do your art at? DPI?

Just out of curiousity. I'd like to get some of my stuff printed, but it's normally either to small for print wise, or too high of DPI to even upload to my gallery. Should I make two variations? One at 300DPI and when completed, save a copy at 72 for online display?

allways make medium-small sized images for the web. its best to work originaly in hi res, obviously because ou can print the work if need be for folio work, sales or exhibits.

never ever put hi res work on line

well putting aside the fact that it will take a while to load and kill servers if too many people do it. the personal reasons are piracy and theft

you would be surprised at how many people hunt the internet for hi res art to sell on the street, My dad once worked in New Zealand for a short while and found someone selling prints and my work was there

Ive seen my work in websites containing photos of peoples rooms with prints up that i never had sold.

the other reason is.. when you down-sample you can control the quality and make it look great and letting the user on average resolution enjoy the full work. hires is great to keep on file. but when your promoting yourself on the web, think of the user. and the usage on the site it's in. it helps everyone.

so.. reasons for going sml-med.

- hires kills bandwidth
- hires is harder to view for users
- hires can get your work ripped/sold illegally
- you can control the quality downsizing

some people prob have better reasons to use hi res.. but those are mine.

the answer to your question is Yes. Make the original in 300dpi or higher and down sample for web..

Carly and Shelley (Noir) have printing experience they can help you in more detail if you give them a yell.. I haven't dealt much with print in a long time

I work for paper n mags weekly , and I always work at 300DPI, in the original print size, to resize for web purposes I just change from 300DPI to 72 and compress a bit the final JPG.

most of the clients work with PDF files, I send them a pdf created from a uncompressed jpg and it gets out just fine.

This way you can use your pieces in any media you need.
Luis made a have a good point about rips from hight res, careful with that.

This is something that all artists should be encouraged to do and made aware of...

There is so much great work out there done in a small resolution when the artist starts out, and when they gain some momentum and start looking into prints, they don't have the option.

The higher the res the better. I sometimes work at much larger sizes than I need the pieces to actually be because you can always size down, but there's not much room to size up from 72dpi...

I think this is one of the reasons I have such a love of vector. I don't like to comprehend that I might make something and one day want to print it as a billboard! It's too much for my brain to handle ;)
