I was wondering whether the option to download artwork from a gallery could be disabled?
I'd love to post up actual client works, but I don't want to enable users to download the images. It seems to imply that it's ok for others to use as they please. Obviously once something is uploaded anyone can download it anyway with a screencap or something, but still I'd rather not risk the ire of existing and potential clients.

This is a good point and an option that I think will be available soon. I'm sure everyone would appreciate this as well.
It is true not much can stop someone who will really want to steal something...though we may do our best to make sure the likelihood is less.

I agree, it sounds like a very good idea.

humm. I maybe wrong here but if the download gfx is the same you get when zooming the image isnīt that just the same? ....you still canīt avoid a print screen.
sygnim, why not a watermark? is yet the best way to keep rippers away.
never the less that download link is unmissable.....me thinks.

Helder; I think in some ways that the "download" link may be thought of as an encouragement to download...as if it is perfectly acceptable. I do not think this is the kind of intentions we want to portray here.
After then, I suppose it is in the artists discretion how big an image they wish to upload. Personally I like how flickr uses this thing of placing an invisible image over the top, so that when sometimes tries to right click and save all they end up with is a blank square. I enjoy that!

Carly:
youīre right about the encouragement fact, it can give the wrong idea to some people. never thought of that.
Smart way to fool some, that one with the transparent square, quite ingenious :) useful too.

Hey C! I didn't know you were here on this site. Good to see you here, and yeah, that is something I would like too.

Enabling and disabling it would be nice. I mean, it's easy to do it either way... just a drag and drop away. Maybe a way to make auto watermarks on pieces you definitely don't want taken like client stuff?

Watermarking is a good idea; but simply embedding the image to a flash movie does the trick - unless someone printscreens it - its virtually safe.

@ wickedmartin: Would that increase file sizes? We don't really want to go overboard, especially since there is no sure fire way to disable people taking other people's works. I know there are Javascripts that disable right click and stuff, if we wanted to go that route...

Download means simply, that. To down load to your computer. And thats it. There aren't any hidden scams with that. The reality with any work/portfolio/idea is if you don't want to open it to interpretation, thoughts, and or possibilities, or take risks, i feel you really shouldn't open them up to the world at all. The reality is this sort of thing comes with creation and its entirety.
& Unfortunatey... regardless of size, Watermark or whatever precautions you take when displaying your artwork.. If an artist/con-artist is
so
desperate to steal your work they can do it even without the first "download". :[
Just by exposing your works in general to the world makes them vulnerable to that. (That is how Trends happen) You must accept this if you are going to make your creations accessible to the world.
It goes without saying that (obviously) CS does not encourage this type of behavior and i do not believe having a button that says "download" implies to the general population "download, distribute, steal, and use to do anything illegal that you wish" ;]

@meredith: Definitely agree with your post.
Javascript disables, Flash embedding and transparent overlays may present obstacles to those wishing to download works from Creativestem, but all these methods remain vulnerable to reverse-engineering: they are by no means effective preventative measures.
However at the end of the day, isn't that simply one of the costs of exposing anything to the public? This predicament is not specific to Creativestem, or even art itself. The conflict of Public vs. Private exists well and truly above this dilemma.
Though to be honest, I quite like downloading the works of other artists here, just for personal use! I would be quite disappointed if this was to cease being supported.
Perhaps james is right, and this should be an option for the artist upon uploading each of their works?

@aesop: exactly! you mentioned things i was trying to say and couldn't word properly.
This is something that we have all dealt with for years now with our involvement in other online communities/groups or anything related to this.
Personally, I feel honored when someone wants to take the time to download my expression and take it in on a more meaningful level. Why Upload to Share if someone cant Download and be Inspired?
I know some of us have been burned in the past with works/ideas stolen and a download feature can be scary however I like to think that CS is part of the movement away from this type of thing.
I agree to having the option for the artist to choose a watermark option or, download disable, or lower res file, etc etc, Putting out your artwork with "protection" Its kind of like a condom.. its not 100%, but it does help some.. but do not be fooled in thinking that your works can only be stolen by a simple word that says "download". Once you submit you have to accept the reality of it. All Kinds Of People Are Out There. Some of which are glued to the web looking for latest trends, and latest break New through's so that they can implement not your work but your IDEA into their corporate marketing sales scheme blah blah, because they don't have time to be creative.
