I looked over most of the posts, and I didn't see anything about this topic, if I missed it, I apologize.
I think that a lot has been said in the forum, and everyone has brought up a lot of good points and made some suggestions that will definitely help the team build and improve the site..
In the end, the answer to a lot of questions comes down to who you're catering the art community to... artists that actually have some skill, or just anybody with a pirated copy of Photoshop/a pencil/a camera their uncle bought them for Christmas and all of a sudden they're a photographer.
What I'm trying to say is that each option seems to have an inclination to attract a certain kind of audience. From upload limits, to profile customization to how interaction works.
If you're appealing to EVERYONE, I'd say give people LESS options in order to deter stupidity (ie. 50 anthro/furry/crap images uploaded every day by one user, horrible CSS abortions in profiles/blogs, people making stupid comments left and right, etc.)
If you're appealing to a more mature artist audience, (which seems to be the case so far, but that will all change once the site goes public) then you should trust that your artists won't abuse certain things like uploads, customization options, etc.
It would be so refreshing to be a part of an art community that actually gives a damn about the quality of work that is presented. I realize that this means filtering and in some cases even vetoing certain people's notion of what passes for art, but I think it can be done in a fairly civil and rational manner.
But again, it depends on how much you want to grow this, what you want to do with it, etc.
The fact is, that there are so many art communities out there right now, it's ridiculous. And none of them offer anything special. DA is still the most popular because it's the largest in the world. Right now, you have great artists and therefore great quality work because people invited each other and they want their friends and talented peers to be among them. Once you open the flood gates though, if there's no filtering system, you're in for one hell of a shit-storm.
I think that in time, the same thing that happened to DA and so many other communities will happen. The talented people will get fed up with the stupid headless monkeys running around flinging poo at everything and either just post a piece or two once in a while, or withdraw completely... and then - all you have left if poo everywhere :P
Anyway, that's just a question I thought was pretty important. Would love to hear some feedback, especially from the team running the show.

Yeah, the Epilogue process was painfully slow though, definitely frustrating and in the end a huge deterrent to showing work there.
Maybe we can filter who becomes a member always... they have to go through a review before joining. That way, if talent/potential is obvious, they can grow within the community, because I totally agree with you that young talent can be very inspiring and motivating.

I don't know. I think everyone should be able to show work without review. If you start judging people based on their "talent" then you might as well forget growing in size. A good art community is an open community. The site will never evolve or grow without the ability to see new ideas.

Of course, as soon as I posted this, the first thread I found was the one about moderation http://www.creativestem.com/forum/feedback/992/moderation/ and that answered the question :P

i think you pointed out a very important thing!
and you are all right with your questioning.
in my opinion, it should have a system like epilogue.net.
bad example, because there its all about fantasy and sci-fi, but they accept also submissions in horror and manga.
BUT, the approve every artwork, and you see a very detailed statistic for each of your pieces. nice approach, but everything is sloooow!.
artwork that not not meet their standard will be rejected, and so you find a lot great artworks over there, but also a lot frustrated people....
but my experience there was that as the page grows, more and more professionals came in, and no one replied to a comment anymore...
thats a showcase, and no community.
what i wanted to say is: its ok to have a standard for people to join, but the level can vary in my opinion. pro´s can also learn from a creative beginner, and the other way round!
its the need to find a way to approve either artworks which would require a stuff, or only the artist who will join, which can be take a while, but manageable for a small staff.
just my two cents.
