I was just wondering what you all consider to be the most effective method of self promotion?

Honestly, I was just talking to the fiance about this. Sounds dumb, but I'm going to do it. Once I get my portfolio up on bloodtypezero, I'm going to get a sticker company to print out "bloodtypezero.com" and just slap it on my back window of my car.
As for exposure, most likely what Meredith is doing now. Try to find some gigs to display or exhibit your work somewhere, and keep going with it.

I don't control my emotions. I just make them digital.

if you are speaking locally... it helps to know a promotional person, check locally for people involved in promotion, believe it or not a lot of people are representing artists and looking for new ones.. i was walking on the streets with prints in my hand and ran into a person who has been getting me into shows. its possible to find people who are willing to help just for the sake of being able to say they helped you, for their own experience. just always be careful and make sure you are aware and everything is communicated in the beginning. people are hard to trust and understand.
local bars/night clubs seem to show an interest, because it gives a new dimension and allows for the crowd to do something in between shows. thanks to that i have a connection who said i could call anytime i think their calendar lists shows that will have a crowd who may fit with my expression. (then i get into the show for free & get entertained while i sit ;b)
i almost prefer these type of events as opposed to galleries.. i don't know why but it seems i prefer being there to represent my work.. but yeah..
like Sean said keep going with it, even if its just web/site promotion or an email list, and passing out business cards. its hard for me because i don't feel social alot of the time so i have to literally make myself go and really work on my mood and attitude. its about being you and sharing you and maintaining a good balance.
days are numbered so you can't let any time slip past if your goal is to share your expression with the world.
