Imagine...,

so you are working on a peice. you are very happy with it. it's general direction is reflecting everything you could have possibly imagined visually that it could, only there is one huge disasterous problem that is keeping you from deleting it. you cant seem to get the colour just right on any part of it.

Thoughts... ?

I hate when I can't get colours I want to fit. I always try at the beginning of anything I do to set a colour palette to work from in the corner of the work and just keep taking and adding to it. When I've already got a piece going and have that issue, though, I just try to go back and touch up, or work with the image adjustments to balance it out and make things bearable.

I think though that colour is only one aspect of an image. There have been images with hideous colours that have just felt right, and as long as you have that, who the hell cares what colours you used. (Also, different colours have different feels, so if you want each element to being about a different feeling, then who cares if it clashes or not.)

yeah more-so hypothetical, i was curious to see what others thoughts were during this type of a situation to get my thoughts on some other track. there are many times that i run into this issue as well. i wanted to present the question without any reference to limit boundaries on responses. your response initially was interesting in that those are two ways to first approach the situation. looking at it technically or aesthetically.

Well from a technical point of view, anything is possible. I like to think that if you something in mind for how you want it to look then it can be done. You just need to figure out how!

From an aesthetic point of view, I would just say it takes experience and experimentation to know what will and what wont work well together. This is in someway subjective though.

Either way, experimenting is the only way to overcome either of these two issues :]

Personally, if I am having issues with colour technically then I will usually take however long to figure it out. Aesthetically....well......depends how frustrated I am. I may give up on it and concur defeat, or I may come back to it later when my head is more straight.

i agree with experimentation, and im heading to the conclusion that it just comes down to getting to wrapped up and your head gets clouded. if you get up and come back and nothing. well then you havent really lost anything-because you are in the same situation when you left, if you come back to it & something comes to you well then all the better. thanks for your perspective, carly :]

Yeah, I agree. Sometimes you just have to sit back and just kind of not think about it because it'll stress you out. From there it'll take the artwork a whole new way and it will be less forced for trying to make everything work. For me with writing music, it takes me weeks to write a song full-out. I edit edit edit every day but only for a small amount of time then I move on because face it, you can't always do it all at once. It'll just ruin your product.

This would be a good time to plug the scratchpad!

If you don't mind other people viewing unfinished stuff...it's a good tool to get opinions on stuff. A lot of the time someone will see something that you never thought of.

And I just wrote a mini article about it in scratchpad forum for anyone who doesn't understand the workings of it. Go go have a look.

make multiple version and make a decision on what you like when i work on a photo i make about 4 diffrent color themes in PS and then decide.. simple system for me..

true luis.. yes it very much includes being organized in the process. so you have a base # of 4 then? i do the same thing but i should be more systematic. i wind up with like 20 of something sometimes named chronologically other times it can get.. incredibly messy depending on my state of mind.
