Sorry I haven't been here for a while guys. Been getting some work out of the way in terms of school. Back though, and with photos theres also some web work done (or at least, started).

A while ago I think I mentioned here a project I was starting. I am still running with it, and am working on a couple of different designs.

The first is:

Essentially today I am asking for your help: which one is better for the site? The site goes around the idea of debating and is going for a little bit of a more mature idea (hence the reason the second was concocted - mainly because of the logo).

I have a development staff on this but am struggling with getting some things done because they are extremely busy with other things. If anyone is interested I'd love to have you - leave me a message.

P.S: To whomever didn't understand the concept of a limited freedom of rights, I finally found a come back. In Canada (at least) there is something called the notwithstanding clause that essentially says that if you use a freedom, but it limits someone else's, then you can be charged for the offense. Same idea here.

The second layout is clean, but lacks a good flow.

As for the first layout, it's strong but could use some tweaking.
First, the colors are too much gray. The text is lost and difficult to follow.
I'd break up the different articles with either an hr or different colored backgrounds. Speaking of different colored backgrounds I'd give the side nav/area a different bgcolor as well.

Hey, thanks! Yeah, I was meaning to tweak the content a little but I find doing the different coloured backgrounds hard... but I got a good idea I might flow with next time I get in there.

Made some edits with the typography. Can't really do anything with the content to make it separate itself... looks shitty with an hr. What do you think?

The second one looks quite good, but I'd personally increase the contrast between the background and the text - for readability. Or maybe its just the poor jpg quality.

Now thats better! However, keep in mind that a text-only layout is usually very dull - esp if the colours are of a matte nature - as in this case.

I'd consider adding some sort of images for each topic - just to breathe more life into it. These images could include avatars or perhaps topic images and so on.

Guh. What's with the colours? They're so dull and bleah, everything is merging into each other and becoming one big blur.

I agree with that. I wanted to make a lot more contrast in colors but everything I came out with didn't seem to appeal to the audience I wanted. I think I'm going to funk with the colors still a bit more because I do what that contrast of elements and for things to come out a bit more.
